Succession planning for families whose principal asset is an operating business.
Jonah Weisbrod advises families, family offices, and closely held businesses on succession, governance, and the transfer of control between generations. His clients are usually the third or fourth generation, at the point where the number of shareholders has grown past the number of people who work in the business.
He is direct that the legal structure is the easier half of the work. The harder half is establishing a governance arrangement that a family will actually follow when the founder is no longer available to overrule it, and he declines engagements where the family is unwilling to spend time on that.
He has practiced at the firm since 2004 and became a partner in 2013. He also advises several private foundations on grantmaking and investment governance.
